The Malutar pyramid

Whole leaf needs
room to unfurl.

Flat paper bags are filled with dust and fannings because that is all that fits. Our translucent pyramids hold whole Darjeeling leaves and give them the space to open fully — so you taste the leaf, not the bag.

Tea pluckers in Darjeeling
The orthodox craft

Sixteen hours,
entirely by hand.

Our teas are made the Orthodox way — the six-step craft that trades shortcuts for flavour, perfected in Darjeeling over two centuries.

01

Plucking

The top two leaves and a bud, picked by hand at each of the four flushes — March, May, July, October.

02

Withering

Warm air drawn through the fresh leaves for ten hours, softening them for the roll.

03

Rolling

Leaves rolled between flat surfaces, waking the enzymes that build flavour.

04

Fermenting

Up to four hours in a climate-controlled room — the stage that defines the cup.

05

Drying

A hot, brief bake halts fermentation and locks the profile in place.

06

Sorting

Graded leaf by leaf through mesh sieves — only whole leaves reach the pyramid.

Tea gardens of Darjeeling
Our story

High in the misty hills of Darjeeling.

Where cool mountain air meets fertile soil, generations of tea growers perfected Malutar. Every aroma and flavour preserved for a refined tea experience.

Est. 2024 · SA Chai

A family estate,
reimagined.

Malutar harkens back to our co-founder's family tea estate in Darjeeling — the world's most famous tea-growing region, harvesting exceptional leaves with methods perfected over hundreds of years. Every tea we sell is chosen to meet standards a grandfather would be proud of.

We buy from growers we know by name, not conglomerates. Our team walks the soil at every step — cultivation, harvest, processing, drying, grading, packing.

From bush to box

Made the orthodox way.

01 — Pluck

Two leaves and a bud

Hand-picked at each of the four flushes — first in March, second in May, monsoon in July, autumnal in October.

02 — Craft

Sixteen hours by hand

Withered, rolled, fermented, dried and sorted in a heritage factory on the ridge — the six-step orthodox process.

03 — Taste

Cupped, graded, chosen

Only the best crop of every harvest makes the pyramid — no bias to any estate, just the finest leaf.

The founders

Two grandfathers.
One promise.

Bunty Agarwal — Darjeeling

A tea estate, and a boy sealing bags by candlelight.

Bunty's grandfather owned a tea estate in Darjeeling. As a boy, Bunty packed processed tea leaves in the estate shed, sealing each bag with a candle flame. Malutar carries that estate's name — and its standards.

Adam Omar Shanti — United States

A dairy farm, and summers spent scrubbing steel tanks.

Adam's grandfather was a dairy farmer. Childhood summers milking cows taught Adam that when you control every step, you know exactly what you're feeding your family.

"We are committed to selling teas that I would happily serve to my own family."

Bunty Agarwal — Co-founder
What we stand for

Teas to your satisfaction.

01

Direct from local farmers

Years spent cultivating relationships with estates, growers and factories — so your tea is free from pesticides, chemicals and industrial processing.

02

Boots in the soil

Our quality team watches everything — cultivation, harvesting, processing, drying, grading and packaging — before a single leaf goes into a pyramid.

03

Blending expertise

Exclusive, limited-plot Darjeeling blends and flavour combinations you won't find anywhere else.

Brew guide

The perfect cup, in four steps.

01

Fresh, filtered, never re-boiled — tired water makes flat tea.

02

03

Steep

One pyramid per cup. Three minutes for bright, five for bold.

04

ABCs of tea

Where do we begin?

Black teas

Fully oxidised, dark in the cup, robust and relatively high in caffeine. Earl Grey, English Breakfast and most Darjeelings live here — including three of our four blends.

Green teas

Minimally oxidised and much lighter — pale gold in the cup, delicate aroma, lower caffeine. Our Jasmine Green Tea is Darjeeling green leaf scented with real blossoms.

Orthodox vs CTC

Orthodox tea is whole leaf, made by hand in six steps over 12–16 hours. CTC is crushed, torn and curled into pellets by machine. Darjeeling leaf is virtually always Orthodox — and so is everything in a Malutar pyramid.

FAQ

Good questions.

Anything else — write to us.

Where is Malutar tea grown?
In the high-altitude gardens of Darjeeling, West Bengal, India — 4,500 to 6,000 ft. Sourcing directly from the estates gives you complete traceability: where your tea is grown, how it is processed, and by whom.
What's in a pyramid?
Whole Darjeeling leaf — never dust or fannings — plus real botanicals where the blend calls for them: natural bergamot in the Earl Grey, whole spices in the Masala Chai, jasmine blossoms in the Jasmine Green. Nothing artificial.
Is it organic?
Yes. Every blend is USDA Organic and Fairtrade certified. We prioritise organic farming, responsible water use and soil conservation in the gardens we buy from.
Does the Masala Chai need milk?
No — and we'd rather you didn't. It's blended to be served clear: a warm, ruby-amber cup where the spice and the Darjeeling leaf speak equally.
How fast do you ship?
Orders ship from U.S. stock, fulfilled by Amazon. Any three boxes ship free. Retail orders are typically ready to ship within 6–8 business days depending on volume.
How should I store it?
Every box holds a resealable pouch. Keep it sealed, cool and out of the sun — tea's enemies are light, air and moisture.
Do you do wholesale or custom blends?
Yes. SA Chai develops private-label and custom blends for cafés, hotels and retailers, and we are actively seeking distribution partners. Get in touch.
Is there an affiliate programme?
There is. Businesses and individuals earn commission by sharing the Malutar teas they love. Contact us to join.
