The Malutar tea disc

The tea bag,
redesigned.

Most tea bags hide staples, strings, glue and bleached paper. Ours hide nothing — whole-leaf tea pressed into a disc of natural, non-chlorinated filter paper. Drop it in, steep, compost.

The orthodox craft

Sixteen hours,
entirely by hand.

Our teas are made the Orthodox way — the traditional six-step craft that trades shortcuts for flavour, perfected in Darjeeling over two centuries.

01

Plucking

The top two leaves and a new bud, picked by hand at each of the four flushes.

02

Withering

Warm air drawn through the fresh leaves for ten hours, softening them for the roll.

03

Rolling

Leaves rolled between flat surfaces, waking the enzymes that build flavour.

04

Fermenting

Up to four hours in a climate-controlled room — the stage that defines the cup.

05

Drying

A hot, brief bake halts fermentation and locks the profile in place.

06

Sorting

Graded leaf by leaf through mesh sieves — only the finest reach the disc press.

Tea gardens of Darjeeling
Our story

Two grandfathers. One promise.

Malutar is named for a family tea estate in Darjeeling — and built on a simple belief: you should know exactly where your tea comes from, and exactly what's in your cup.

Est. 2024 · SA Chai

Born in the hills
of Darjeeling.

Established in 2024, SA Chai ("SACH") offers handpicked teas from the subtropical hills of Darjeeling, India — the world's most renowned region for high-quality and specialty teas found nowhere else. When you buy from us, you buy tea sourced directly from local farmers — not from conglomerates and other faceless entities.

Our leaves are handpicked and processed with techniques developed and perfected in the 19th century, then selected from the purest grades before being sealed and shipped to you.

The founders

It started with
two grandfathers.

Bunty Agarwal — Darjeeling

A tea estate, and a boy sealing bags by candlelight.

Bunty's grandfather owned a tea estate in Darjeeling. As a boy, Bunty helped pack processed tea leaves in the estate shed, sealing each plastic bag with a candle flame. Malutar carries that estate's name — and its standards.

Adam Omar Shanti — United States

A dairy farm, and summers spent scrubbing steel tanks.

Adam's grandfather was a dairy farmer. Childhood summers milking cows taught Adam that when you control every step of the process, you know exactly what you're feeding your family.

Graduates of London Business School, Adam and Bunty left two decades in financial services to build something tangible again — a supply chain they can walk, step by step, from soil to cup.

"Each tea sold under the Malutar Tea brand is carefully selected to embody the standards of quality that uphold my family's beliefs. Standards of which my grandfather would be proud. We are committed to selling teas that I would happily serve to my own family."

Bunty Agarwal — Co-founder
